Psychologically, the writers will stop writing for a vet actor 10 weeks beforehand when a veteran actor is in renegotiation talks.

Well that explains a few things.......

I have to tell you that as I was reading and writing the summary for this article, I just kept going back to Days for some odd reason. The writing, the amount of episodes they tape per week, etc. I think because they are taping MONTHS in advance, it just seemed like someone from Days.

Regardless, it's sad. You never want to see this and unfortunately that's the way jobs are now.

From what I read from your #1 post, it has to be Days and its current problems. There is something going on that viewers will not be able to understand. Because its business side of things. They are also pushing newbies to the forefronts, while keeping core and vets in the back...even though they keep promoting Rafe and Hope. And that because Days wants them to be the new face...of the show. It is pretty obvious that Days really loves ROPE! And just look at the characters of Daniel, Eric, Nicole and few others, they are cut short! And its a real shame!

I also closely observed that few weeks or each week or month, Days brings back stories to the forefront. Good example is CHABBY. Last week, they were on less. Next week, they will be full blown. I don't know the week after but viewers are excited because Ben is back. Anyway, it looks like from that post, Days is working on more changes, just to keep the budget running smoothly.

I think some of this is GH related, not Days.

#SorryNotSorry

The most surprising thing about this article to me is that it was printed in our favorite magazine.

It feels like the straits that DAYS is in, are pretty evident at this point. Some of the other shows have been able to keep more of a veneer of the way things used to be, so it's interesting to hear that these issues probably are affecting all of the shows to one degree or another.

I've heard much of this before, but reading it all at once is just sad.

The part about lowballing actors (although it probably happens on most -- if not all -- the shows) reminds me of what's been happening at GH lately.

The switching people to recurring has me wondering about a few folks at Days as well. Hmmm. It could explain a few things.

All in all, these types of moves are a big part of why soaps are dying. Reap what you sow, I guess.
Not a surprise but sad nonetheless. Most of us saw this coming way back when.....slowly but surely, as in a soap about vulture capitalism, big corporations have swallowed the networks. Network entertainment is a miniscule part of a multi national, and soaps are a small part of the network entertainment. Profit alone matters and quality is not even considered, let alone talent. When the corporations started taking over they used "reality" tv to diminish the unions, actors unions, writers, crews. Sadly they have bullied their way into making "entertainment" a for profit for a small few by extreme monopolies.

If anyone ever saw the scifi show on around 1987 or 1988, called Max Headroom, you will know what I mean about how "reality" tv became the weapon of the corporation to destroy unions, to divide and conquer the masses. A few writers loved it and were rewarded handsomely for siding with management, ending the soaps dealing with "issues" and going for the way out there, bizarre stories. Over time, to compete with reality stuff, soaps used many more acting gimmicks, like women calling each other out, cussing, name calling and slapping. In depth stories are barely ever scene. Veteran actors who came of age, or came into their own in the 70s and 80s, know how great the writing was, how much the actors were respected in terms of knowing their own characters. Now those vets are lucky to be on a show, let alone lead a story. Writers who really care lose out to the strike breaking pets. Sigh. So sad. It was a great run for a great genre.....but I think the best stuff now will be relegated to history or to the internet shows where actors do their own stuff.

On the other hand, the interviewee says that newcomers will work for anything which means the situation isn't any better in other sectors either.

This person interviewed feels that bringing back a big name from the show doesn't necessarily mean that it will work. You can't have the show bring back a person and have that person only work one or two days a week and have them doing nothing. It doesn't work.
This is totally referring to Genie Francis. She is so wasted the little time that she's on GH. I've got to respect Lynn Herring for saying that she's not sticking around for here or there guest appearances and will only be available when there is a story need for Lucy Coe.
